Live Over Here and Over There

1999 Compilation by Mott

UK CD

Storm; The Great White Wail; Collision Course; Hold On You're Crazy; She Does It [Friar's, Aylesbury1976.06.12]; Storm; Career (No Such Thing As Rock And Roll); Love Me Two Times; I Don't Wanna Discuss It; All The Way From Memphis [Polytechnic Union Hall, Leeds UK 1976.11.04]; By Tonight; Born Late '58; The Great White Wail; She Does It; It Takes One To Know One; Sweet Jane; Violence; All The Young Dudes [Forum, Los Angeles CA 1975.12.05]; By Tonight; The Great White Wail; Rock and Roll Queen; It Takes One To Know One; Sweet Jane [Agora, Cleveland OH 1975.11.25]

This set was recorded straight from the mixing board onto cassette, and the sound quality is pretty good considering the source. The vocals are clear, and the guitar is up front for the most part. The sound quality drops off in the middle of the Cleveland Agora gig, which the liner notes insist was a problem with the mixing desk. FM tapes of the same show, however, indicate that the levels on the cassette were probably just set too high. Sound problems aside, the set gets docked a notch for being a bit too short (115 minutes) and for repeating too much material. For hardcode fans, this a great momento of an under-represented period in the band's history. The casual fan, however, will probably not find it quite as interesting and probably would have settled for a single disc.

After Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson left Mott The Hoople in late 1974, Overend Watts, Dale Griffin, and Morgan Fisher spent time at Gooseberry Studios in Gerrard Street recording demos and auditioning new members for their band. This CD compiles some of those demos and auditions, and also adds some 1976 recordings by The Paper Bags, a project masterminded by Morgan Fisher and which involved many Mott members in varying capacities. For those who are amused by the band's wacky sense of humor, Golders Green and The Spook Meets The Kook are required listening.

The packaging is up to Angel Air's usual standards, a picture disc, clear jewel case, and a sixteen page booklet filled with rare photos and Buffin's unique brand of liner notes. The sound quality on the disc is mostly good, with the exception of the audition tapes. These tracks are a bit rough, some are incomplete, and one song (She Does It) was intentionally edited to remove a wart - but this time around, Campbell Devine wasn't responsible!
